9.11 DJ Ayres of The Rub at Som

Posted on August 18th, 2010 3:36 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment & Rock It Sciences present:  DJ Ayres of The Rub at Som on Saturday, September 11th 2010.

Originally from Mississippi, DJ Ayres is famous for being the founding father of The Rub, the Brooklyn monthly party that swiftly gained a reputation for being “The Best Party in NYC” (New York Press) back in 2002 and to this day remains one of the staples of NYC nightlife. Combining everything from 80’s pop and disco to house, reggae and hip-hop, The Rub provides “something for everyone, no matter what you’re into,” (resident Cosmo Baker) and in the process helped launch DJ Ayres into worldwide consciousness as one of the best mixtape-making, party dj’s around. Further cementing his status as a key player in American club culture is the fact that Ayres has released over 20 remixes, both on his own T&A label plus Money Studies, GAMM, ESL, Scion A/V and more.

Support from Rock It Sciences founder Eric Sharp and of course our very own Shane King.

SOM is the new “go-to” spot in the heart of the bustling, ultra-hip Mission district. In Portuguese, SOM means not only ’sound’, but also the feeling that resonates within a person when they connect with an experience. SOM recently won best new club in both of the Bay Area’s most well-read periodicals, the SFWeekly and the Bay Guardian.

9.18 - Pantha Du Prince at The Independent

Posted on August 25th, 2010 11:12 am

Hacksaw Entertainment Presents…. Pantha Du Prince at The Independent on Saturday, September 18th.

Pantha Du Prince doesn’t make it to the USA often enough. The German electronic music wizard released his third album on Rough Trade called Black Noise earlier this year. The album features guest vocals by Panda Bear and bass by Tyler Pope of LCD Soundsystem/!!! which helped him win the coveted Pitchfork ‘Best New Music’ award. Animal Collective even remixed one of his tracks!

You can stream the entire album Black Noise on the Rough Trade website!

Support comes from The Sight Below a shoegaze/techno act out of Seattle. All of The Sight Below’s songs are performed live: The artist runs E-bowed, slide, and lightly picked guitars through a series of loopers, 12-bit reverb boxes, and delay units, kneading and distending the notes until they drone like bees in a tunnel or keen like an orchestra of singing saws.

Tickets are still available from either The Independent Box Office (with no service charge) or online at Ticketweb.

The Independent — 21+ — 9pm-1am — 628 Divisadero Street

9.16 - Jimmy Edgar at Rickshaw Stop

Posted on August 2nd, 2010 6:39 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment presents Jimmy Edgar (live) at Rickshaw Stop.

The Detroit based electronic music producer signed to Warp Records is finally making his way to the Bay. His new album ‘XXX’ just came out on K7 records and he’s embarking on a world tour to support it. His music is described as a blend of jazz, funk, techno and house and despite being 25, he’s a veteran of the electronic music scene. He played his first raves when he was 15 in warehouses in Detroit, and was signed by Warp Records at just 18. Safe to say the guy knows how to throw down a party.

Check out the lead single from the record called ‘Hot, Raw Sex’

Tickets are available for $10 now from the Rickshaw Stop website

Support from ‘San Francisco’s best kept secret’ Loose Shus, and Boyz IV Men.

DJ Mehdi + Riton = Carte Blanche at Mezzanine - 7.2

Posted on May 7th, 2010 7:54 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment, Parallels, & Scion present the SF debut of Carte Blanche (Ed Banger)

Four decks, one mixer, and a TR 909, of course. No bangers, strictly house music.

DJ Mehdi from Paris and the UK’s Riton recently teamed up to form a supergroup of house music called Carte Blanche.  Busy P heard the results and immediately signed the group to Ed Banger records, for a 5-track EP called Black Billionaires out on May 31st.

Mehdi has spent the last 4 years touring the world with Justice and A-Trak, and remixing the likes of Santigold and Busta Rhymes, all while producing his own tracks and releasing an album on Ed Banger.

Riton is a veteran Newcastle DJ with the Radio Soulwax family, who has  remixed LCD Soundsystem and Crookers, and took the number one spot in the Kraut Rock charts in 2008 with his Eine Kleine Nacht Musik project on Modular Records.

Together they are Carte Blanche - Think of them as Europe’s answer to Duck Sauce.  All house music, all night long! Support from White Girl Lust LIVE (Solid Bump) and Shane King (Hacksaw).

Jack Beats at Mighty - 6.24

Posted on April 23rd, 2010 6:49 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment, Sunset Promotions, and Scion present Jack Beats (Cheap Thrills) at Mighty.

Jack Beats - The brainchild of Beni G (Mixologists) and Plus One (Scratch Perverts). Jack Beats represent part of the new wave of British house music. Wobbly basslines, big breakdowns and edgy accapella’s are cut, copied and pasted together to create a floor-filling brand of house. This time we have both Beni G & Plus One playing together for the first time in San Francisco - should crush doubly as last time, when Beni G murdered the dance floor solo!

Support from MoPo, Shane King, and Fringe DJs.

And check out Nor Cal Scionify, rounding up and presenting great music, art, and culture.

Telephoned LIVE (Fool’s Gold) at Harlot · FREE · 4.28

Posted on April 11th, 2010 2:39 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment presents Brooklyn’s Telephoned, a new venture from Sammy Bananas (Fool’s Gold) and Maggie Horn (Good Peoples). “We’re like a cover band, but better!”

Telephoned was created when New Yorkers Sammy Bananas and Maggie Horn decided to recreate their own version of T-Pain’s “Can’t Believe It.” Neither a cover or a remix, the recording took subtle elements of the original and tweaked it into something entirely new, a track that shone in both on the dance floor and the radio (LA’s Power 106 for example). The hybrid sound is “Bottle service electro meets Triplets Of Belleville!”, as Maggie Horn puts it. ”Can’t Believe It” was such a success the duo went on to create an entire album of songs entitled “Off the Hook”, as well as an additional Telephoned EP on the forward thinking Fool’s Gold Records.

But don’t take our word for it. With the thousands of acts in Austin this year, Pitchfork’s Amy Phillip’s described Telephone’s performance at SXSW as “the most fun thing I’ve seen at SXSW so far.”

Download the entire “Off the Hook Mixtape” at RCRD LBL. Enjoy!

Sammy Bananas will be playing special DJ set as well. Additional support from White Girl Lust (Solid Bump Records) and Shane King (Hacksaw).

Oh, did we mention this event is FREE and there will be lots of FREE VODKA until 10?
RSVP required at http://www.metrowize.com/004 for free entry and free booze!

Javelin, Tussle, & Bronze at The Rickshaw Stop - 5.6

Posted on March 30th, 2010 6:48 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment proudly presents Brooklyn based duo Javelin, San Francisco’s Tussle (who we’ve thankfully not yet lost to Brooklyn’s allure), and the hypnotizing drums/electronics group Bronze.

Javelin’s self-released LP, entitled Jamz n Jemz, is but one element of Tom van Buskirk and George Langford’s DIY approach to art and performance. The first label release, featuring silkscreened thrift store sleeves, the live performance often assisted be a twenty boom-box ’soundsystem’ to help transmit strange frequencies, and the layered, intricate, sample-based tracks, are all testament to Javelin’s commitment to quality and detail. The finely crafted collection of lost rhythms and eccentric bits of crate-dug sounds remind the listener of nostalgic nights toying with the radio dial, while warmly assuring us that the art of sampling is very much alive and well.

Support from O.K. Hole DJs.

Jinder at Triple Crown - 1.09

Posted on December 10th, 2009 6:24 pm

Hacksaw Entertainment, Goldsweat & BRSLQ present a showcase of new music for 2010.

Jinder - playing live in SF for the first time, this 20.y.o Swedish singer/producer will blow you away. Dark, synth based disco with distinctive vocals have earned her comparisons to Lykke Li and Little Boots… but this is much Dancier music, and She has been signed to NYC’s Trouble & Bass label along with Drop The Lime & AC Slater!

Mike 2600 (Burlesque)
Starting off as a college radio DJ in St. Louis, Mike learned his way around a pair of turntables and began building his record collection, spinning at parties on campus and around the city. In 1999, he released “Yars’ Revenge,” a 4-track mixtape of funk breaks, scratch routines, and Black Sabbath and Sesame Street samples.
Residing in Minneapolis, Mike can be found cutting up funk, disco, classic hip hop, oldies, Miami Bass, and ’80s rock and R&B at parties and clubs around town, opening up for acts such as Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, The Rub, Spankrock, Atmosphere, DJ Steinski, and Prince Paul.

Sticky K (Dubsided/Goldsweat)
Dave Taylor’s (Switch) taste-making record label, Dubsided, has been churning out big tunes for near a decade. Staying true from the first release, Dubsided Records has more Cy Young awards than Tim Lincecum and Jim Palmer put together.

A few artists have had career launching EPs including; Jesse Rose, Nadastrom, Solid Groove, Switch, Herve, Lee Mortimer, Trevor Loveys and of course the Bay Area’s very own Sticky K.

Sticky K has produced a grip of remixes for the likes of Crookers, Lady Gaga, B. Rich, La Roux, MSTRKRFT, Maluca, Larry Tee and Amanda Blank! Its no secret his sound is loud… and he’s only just begun. Sticky K has a host of new remixes all over the blogs, and a 2nd EP out soon on Dubsided.

Neon Indian at Rickshaw Stop - 11.19

Posted on October 9th, 2009 10:44 pm

ADVANCED TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT. 50-100 tickets will be available at the door.

An elusive new project from composer Alan Palomo. Neon Indian delivers equal parts synthetic nostalgia, Dreampop lullabies, and grinding guitar noise to create something eerier than the sum of its parts. Forged after a hazy winter gathering in Texas, this initial batch of tracks were the result of field recordings, record samples, a collection of bizarre synth sounds. Soliciting the visual acrobatics of Video artist Alicia Scardetta, this project is setting out to be a multimedia maelstrom.

Orbiting around the themes of drug induced heartbreak, weary afternoons, and lost chances, this music provides a lush soundtrack to the deadbeat exploits of teenage ennui. Neon Indians bedroom ballads have already forged the debut full-length Psychic Chasms, out now and rated 8.6 by Pitchfork with the Best New Music tag.

The first release, single Deadbeat Summer, already made it’s way around the blogs and received a 9/10 and Best New Music status from Pitchfork.

$10 tickets are available now via  Brown Paper Tickets.

Support from The Love X Nowhere
Nite Jewel has been added to the date! - awesome slowed-down disco stuff, don’t miss!

In Flagranti (live) at Poleng Lounge 10.07

Posted on September 24th, 2009 3:45 pm

Special edition of Disco vs. Dubstep with Brooklyn’s In Flagranti at Poleng Lounge.

In Flagranti perform live for a very special edition of Disco vs. Dubstep, showcasing their cosmic ‘cut and paste’ disco sound, described by XLR8R Magazine as “rare grooves from another planet”.

Starting their own label “Codek Records” twelve years ago, Sasha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor  aimed to explore the cosmic background in every possible way by creating and putting together different elements of art/graphic design and styles of music in to a seamless flow. Their DIY attitude, Woman-Glamour-Trash-Chic design aesthetic, extensive catalogue of releases, and now legendary mix tapes, have gained them a strong following and street credibility in New York and abroad. If their already impressive live show weren’t enough, In Flagranti pushes the envelope further by adding video clips that accompanies each of their songs.

Support from Bender, with Kid Kameleon and Dials in the dubstep room.
18+ - 10:00pm-2:00am - $5 cover
